Maria Farinyak, due to poverty, is forced to give her son, nine-year-old Mykhailo, into the care of her late husband's relatives: uncle Stefan, the owner of a bookstore, and aunt Kasia, a strict woman who is not happy about the presence of a stranger's child in the house. This is how the story of Misko Farinyak, a boy from the early 20th century, begins, which strangely intertwines with the story of Mykhailo Farinyak, a man from the early 21st century.
