Kurt Vonnegut (1922–2007) was an American science fiction writer. He is one of the most significant American writers of the 20th century. In his work, he masterfully combines elements of satire, black humor, and science fiction. The “Naturalist Cruise of the Century” will set sail in 1986. Its passengers aboard the Beagle (the ship on which Darwin reached the origins of life on the planet in 1835) will head for the cradle of all existence—the Galápagos Archipelago, where Darwin once made his most significant discoveries concerning the origin of species through natural selection. However, the author has a trap in store for his characters. And just as everything returns to its origins, humanity will perish where it was born. Yet on this cruise, like a voyage aboard Noah’s Ark, the strongest, most adaptable, and most flexible representatives of the human species will survive, becoming the starting point for the development and evolution of new human beings. However, none of the representatives of the new civilization will be capable of writing a Beethovenian Ninth Symphony, nor will they possess brains as large as those of their ancestors a million years ago.
