"Ethnographic groups of Ukrainians of the Carpathians. Hutsuli" is a scientific and journalistic work prepared by experienced scientists of the world-famous academic Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine under the leadership of Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Professor Stepan Pavlyuk. The monograph is devoted to the study of all aspects of Hutsul life. Hutsul customs, legal and ethical standards, beliefs, superstitions, demonology, customs, rites represent complex and extremely valuable material for science. It traces the imprints of the spiritual life of different eras, starting from the original communal system, the combination of ancient pagan and later Christian elements, fantastic irrational ideas with practical experience acquired and tested over the centuries.
Hutsul folklore is also rich in relict elements, especially ritual songs, tales, legends, incantations related to beliefs and superstitions. In the folk poetry of the Hutsuls, such song genres as kolomyyka, sovanka-chronicle have acquired a special development. The melody of folk singing, instrumental music, traditional dances, original folk art, etc. are characterized by their unique originality.
Even in the past, Hutsul region was famous for its rich applied and decorative art: ceramics, wood carving, Easter eggs, artistic weaving, embroidery, artistic processing of metal, leather, and horn products. Traditional Hutsul clothing with its characteristic decorations and additions (zgards, cheres, tobivka, etc.) is characterized by its unique color scheme and artistic orientation.
