“My flag was peed on by a cat” is the author’s attempt to depict her life in a small town near Luhansk. It seems that time has stopped there and has long been stuck either in hopeless Soviet backdrops or in the difficult 1990s. There seems to be an impenetrable wall between the present and new realities; information is most often drawn from the television (of course, Russian channels), the newspapers “AIDS-Info” or “Facts,” and above all this, confident slag heaps tower with sayings like: “Because we’ve always done it this way,” “Because you’re a girl,” “You have to live so that no one envies you,” “We didn’t live well – so don’t even start.” This text is pure irony and mockery, sarcasm on the edge, sometimes seeming to border on common sense. It is especially hard for those who are “not like the others,” “the smartest,” and generally “it will be hard for you to live with your character.” This is a world where sick children are taken to a magical old man who rolls an egg over them, where a girl is born “to be a helper,” and where unpresentable family secrets (for example, someone’s Jewish origin) are carefully hidden from the watchful community. The text is full of humor (yes, sometimes dark), and at times strikes with tragedy. It casually recalls times when mentioning that you ate bread today could get your whole family arrested, and those who survived, having escaped the execution pit, lived their whole lives between reality and their inner relentless horror that “the papers might be bad.” And no, “My flag…” was not written with the intention of “finally understanding Donbas.” In fact, “My flag was peed on by a cat” is all of us, sometimes on different sides of the wall.
