The exciting and engaging game of checkers, familiar to all of us since childhood, is still enjoyed by both children and adults today. Developing erudition, attention, and memory, checkers, alongside chess, confidently hold a leading position among modern educational games.
Some historians claim that a game similar to modern checkers was enjoyed by ancient Egyptian pharaohs. There is also a theory of Norman origin for checkers. Archaeological finds of amber, bone, clay, and wooden game boards and pieces in the territory of Ukraine indicate that a game resembling checkers was well known in Kievan Rus as early as the 4th-10th centuries. They gained particular popularity in the 16th century, when they finally conquered Europe. Among the famous historical figures who were once passionate about checkers were Vladimir Monomakh and Napoleon Bonaparte.
Almost two hundred years have passed since the first world championship in checkers was held. Today, organizing competitions in this game no longer surprises anyone.
Throughout its history, the rules of the game have undergone many changes, and now they have clearly defined regulations.
Currently, there are several variants of checkers — including the standard Russian checkers, international, Brazilian checkers, as well as Turkish, diagonal, Canadian, Spanish, and others.
