It was the fourth year of the world war. Weary from the events, Lieutenant General of the Russian Imperial Army Pavlo Petrovych Skoropadsky, a descendant of an old Cossack officer family, did not yet know that he would become the hetman of the independent Ukrainian State.

The era of change, recklessly brought closer by revolutionaries of every stripe, had turned into an apocalypse—a war of all against all—but Skoropadsky found the courage to take on the thankless burden of building a state. The attempt ended in complete and predictable failure, but some of the hetman's initiatives have survived to this day: Ukraine owes him, for example, the Academy of Sciences.
