Valerian Pidmohylny wanted to write a novel in which the ship's master would be a woman. And he wrote "A Small Drama" — a novel about new relationships, a new way of life, new morals, and eternal questions that arise in the unexpected wonders of the age of technical progress. Wild irrational passion or cold rational calculation — who will emerge victorious from the duel? Is victory even possible if both love and suffering are merely standard reactions of a squirrel? Pidmohylny skillfully stages a small drama on an intimate stage, the name of which is life. This is one of the best philosophical novels in Ukrainian literature of the twentieth century.
