The Picture of Dorian Gray is an exquisite story about a handsome, wealthy lifelong bachelor who was enamored of luxury and beauty, professing a philosophy of hedonism and living solely for pleasure. Yet emotional wounds and life’s drama did not spare this self-assured beauty. Thus, to escape inner torment and suffering, he had to flee to country estates with sumptuous feasts, opium dens on the outskirts of the city, dubious neighborhoods with street girls, and while away his life in the company of self-absorbed dandies who tried to imitate their idol—Dorian—in everything. The novel is one of the foundational examples of fin-de-siècle decadent prose, alongside Joris-Karl Huysmans’s Against Nature, Gabriele D’Annunzio’s The Triumph of Death, and Ladislav Klíma’s The Suffering of Prince Sternenhoch. The text is presented according to the 1891 typescript, with indications of the passages and chapters that the author added to the final version, as well as the fragments he deleted or replaced.
